ISLAND CHILDREN

Island children attend one-room schools and sometimes two or three room schools shared by multiple grades ranging from K-8. Today the children are connected to the outside world by internet, yet their physical location and its resulting isolation encourages personal ingenuity and creativity. The great beauty of these places instills a rich awareness of nature.

Authors and illustrators and other visitors remark on, “the respectful, eager and engaged manner with which they are welcomed by the school children and community. The experience is exhilarating!”
In the summer many of the children assist their families by helping on a lobster boat, caring for younger siblings, and doing odd jobs. Some participate in our reading program, Friends Over Books, enjoying reading and discussing books with friends as part of their summer fun!
