Authors, illustrators and volunteers travel by boats and planes to visit the Maine islands’ children. These trips range from 5 to 23 miles off the coast of Maine.
Imagine what it must be like to live on an island, in a very small community (several only have about 50 people) and only go to the mainland once in a while. Residents say that the appeal includes the natural beauty and close knit community life as well as time to think, explore, and live by the sea. The history of each island helped determine what life is like there and reveals how early people were drawn to these uncommon places.
